Period ⅞ Should you play pokemon go? A couple months ago, a new app called Pokemon Go was released. It rose to popularity very quickly and soon it became the most downloaded and played app. Sure enough it could be a very fun game, but is it even safe? It can lead you to very dangerous areas and, gated off communities, and it requires so much personal data, what would they use it for? This app may even encourage you to do things but not in a good way. So if you were to play this game you would most likely notice that it is very distracting, especially since we’re not paying attention it can lead you to somewhere dangerous. Is this game even worth the play? To start off, let’s say that you’re trying to catch a Pokemon but it’s in a place that you wouldn’t want to go to, or even think about going to. The player would get hurt searching in unsafe areas, I wouldn’t go there. In article A, the author states, “The game ‘could be leading people into areas where they don’t belong’ such as construction sites or shuttered storefronts.” Imagine having to go to these places, going to a construction site would be completely dangerous. You could fall into a very deep hole. Or going to a run down place, that would be considered trespassing, and something can fall on you. People would try to catch Pokemon that are in restricted areas, and I don’t think that those are the smartest ideas. As stated on document A, “The company declined to provide a list of fenced off areas or discuss how it selects those spots.” Most areas are fenced off for a reason, and most areas are just private properties. (Trespassing) Pokemon go could cause players a lot of trouble. Furthermore, with all that data that it requires, most of it is very personal and they wouldn’t even need it. Would you trust it? This app could try to steal information for business use, and not the good type of business. On document B, the author states “Pokemon Go uses your phone’s location, your Ip address, and the web page you most recently visited before playing all connected with your real name and account information.” Before installing this app, take a look at privacy policy. It requires things that might not even know what they are, but with the things that it needs it might steal your very personal information. If you were to be hacked, most of your information won’t be given back. Since you won’t what all of this is, you may think that’s okay. On article B, the author states, “companies want to collect as much information as possible about their customers so they can prepare for future business.” Most players don’t understand that the things they are giving away to this game is so personal. It would be so unusual if they needed to know what I had used before going to the app. So therefore I honestly wouldn’t play this game. Moreover, I think Pokemon Go can actually lead you into having injuries. Yes, there is a chance that it will lead you to danger, or being hospitalized. As stated on document D, “ News reports say that say that users have tripped, fallen into a lake, crashed a car, and sustained any other injuries while playing.” People can drown in lakes, and die in car accidents, the amount of money you need to have things repaired and having to pay for injuries costs a lot. Others in the community may easily feel disrespected simply because these players are trying to catch a Pokemon. On document D the author states In their quest to capture creatures, players are failing to respect their surroundings.” PLayers will be near the homes of others and people deserve their own privacy. They wouldn’t want a stranger or a child standing in front of their house, that’s not a good idea. This game can get you more exercise but it sure isn’t safe. To conclude, players should decide not to play Pokemon Go, because all of these dangers and all the things it might cost you. If it uses your information for things other than the game, then what’s the point of installing this game? It has many benefits but being hacked or falling into a lake sure isn’t one of them. Therefore, in my opinion, I wouldn’t download Pokemon Go, it just wouldn’t be safe. My score for this essay was a 4 and a 4.
